Jihadists, paedophile rapists and seditious preachers sleep easy in their beds in modern Britain, but we can take comfort from the fact that police forces are diligent in hunting down people who say hurtful things about members of that topmost protected species, the 'Muslim community'.

Whilst their more extreme elements may gang-rape little English girls, batter women senseless or threaten to behead those who insult Islam, such petty misdemeanours rarely drag the rozzers away from their computers, where more pressing matters demand attention. Nothing can distract our doughty boys-in-blue as, hunched before flickering screens, they endlessly trawl Facebook and Twitter for the crime that really concerns their political masters: the unforgivable crime of criticising Islam.

Last week Liberty GB radio host, Tim Burton, was charged by West Midlands Police with racially aggravated harassment, after his post on Twitter described a prominent individual as "a mendacious grievance-mongering taqiyya-artist".

The delicate flower who needs defending from such criticism is none other than Mr Fiyaz Mughal OBE, founder of the Tell Mama organisation, who in June 2013 was revealed as a deceiver by Telegraph journalist Andrew Gilligan:

The project, called Tell Mama, claimed that there had been a 'sustained wave of attacks and intimidation' against British Muslims after the killing of Drummer Lee Rigby, with 193 'Islamophobic incidents' reported to it, rising to 212 by last weekend.
The group's founder, Fiyaz Mughal, said he saw 'no end to this cycle of violence', describing it as 'unprecedented'. The claims were unquestioningly repeated in the media.
Tell Mama and Mr Mughal did not mention, however, that 57 per cent of the 212 reports referred to activity that took place only online, mainly offensive postings on Twitter and Facebook, or that a further 16 per cent of the 212 reports had not been verified. Not all the online abuse even originated in Britain.

Contrary to the group's claim of a 'cycle of violence' and a 'sustained wave of attacks', only 17 of the 212 incidents, 8 per cent, involved the physical targeting of people and there were no attacks on anyone serious enough to require medical treatment.

As a result of these revelations, Tell Mama had its public funding discontinued; and it's no surprise that some of the taxpayers who have given hundreds of thousands of pounds to that body since its founding two years ago vented their anger publicly, as did Tim Burton again in the following tweet:

Breaking News – Mendacious Muslim scumbag Fiyaz Mughal agrees to stop telling porkies if the British Government gives him his £214,000 back

Let's be clear. Fiyaz Mughal is one of many Islamic propagandists who strive to present 'Islamophobia' as a primary cause of disharmony in our country. The reality, as we know, is that if militant Muslims were to cease bombing, raping, beheading and abusing the British people, the "underlying Islamophobia in our society" (as Mughal terms it) would disappear. But of course it's much easier for cowardly politicians and police chiefs to shoot the messenger than to respond effectively to the growing Islamist menace.

To be fair, we should not single out Mughal for deceiving in the cause of Islam, as the practice is widespread and many Muslims consider it a religious duty. Indeed, they have a special word for it – taqiyya.

The government (whose dupes have given him wads of our cash) and the police (ever fearful of Muslim reaction), seek to stave off criticism of Mughal, and are now following his example and busily transforming every robust verbalisation (i.e. free speech) into a 'hate crime'. Thus, despite the absurdity of the charge against Tim Burton (Islam is not actually a race), this decent, patriotic Englishman now faces a possible prison sentence just for criticising an establishment figure who misled the British public.

Tell Mama has previously threatened numerous members of the public with libel actions for criticising it on Twitter. One of these tweet-criminals opined, "they are just trying to shut down debate". Shutting down criticism of Islam is not only a serious infringement of free speech, but also clears the way for those intent on Islamifying Britain – aided and abetted by treacherous politicians, quisling police and a politicised legal system.

Tim Burton's trial is set for the afternoon of Tuesday 18th February 2014 at Birmingham Magistrates' Court. The magistrates will no doubt be full of the usual political correctness and multicultural idiocy, so he's not expecting a sympathetic hearing. But he will fight his corner, and Liberty GB will stand with him.

Cairo, Egypt-With the Christmas/New Year celebrations of Christian Copts, which last until mid-January, a rising fear is spreading among Egyptians that the Muslim Brotherhood is poised to carry out attacks on the Copts.  The Muslim Brotherhood considers the Copts the major cause of having them dispelled from power through their support of the Army in the overthrow of Mohamed Morsi.

The Christmas Octave is a prime time to find Copts together in celebration—to the Brotherhood both a perfect time to take revenge of Christians through acts of terrorism, and a way to portray the Egyptian Army as a force too weak to face terrorism.

With the date set on the vote for the new Constitution, the Brotherhood—recently classified as a terrorist group—aims to launch a number of bombings and random killings in order to scare people from voting,  knowing that most will agree on the new Constitution, especially Christians. 

The new Constitution bans political parties based on religions, or the use of religious slogans and houses of worship in electoral campaigns, which means the end of many religious parties that were formed after the revolution of January 2011.

Egyptians in general and Christians in particular, are expected to turn out in large numbers in support of the new Constitution, which brings to an end the transitional phase which has caused hardship in Egypt and speeds up the election of a new president and parliament.

Egyptian Copts know they’re being targeted mainly by the Brotherhood and their followers, yet are determined to vote on the Constitution and prove they will not be intimidated.  Coptic websites and social media are wary of trouble on New Year’s Day.  They are preparing for young people to coordinate with the police to prevent the passage of cars and motorcycles in an effort to keep terrorists away from streets leading to the churches.

Intensive preparations are already underway by the Army and Police for traditional Magdi Elshahed celebrations.  Security experts have confirmed that IF New Year celebrations this year do not witness bombings… they certainly will witness a state of chaos and security problems with clashes between security forces and elements of the Brotherhood.

A senior police source revealed to CFP that the plan to secure the New Year celebrations and beyond, is not based on securing churches only, but also about securing the roads leading to them, and securing the neighbourhoods with wide sweeps to get rid of any “parked cars”. 

If I were a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, the last thing I would do is attack Christians or their churches.  Everyone knows that any terrorist operation against the Copts will be blamed on the Muslim Brotherhood—not only Copts but the entire Egyptian society, including Christians and Muslims will blame the Brotherhood.  Any attempt to bring sectarian strife through the bombings will fail because the relationship between Muslims and Christians in Egypt has become very tight and is more unified than ever right now.

For his part, interim President Adly Mansour congratulated the Copts for Christmas, the New Year, and for the birth of Jesus Christ. A spokesman for the armed forces congratulated the Coptic Orthodox, evangelicals and Catholics on their celebrations. He said that even amid the atmosphere of grief and sorrow due to the fall of a large number of police and military members in recent bombings,  the armed forces would never forget to give congratulations to the Egyptian Muslims and Christians on the occasion of the birth of Jesus Christ and the coming New Year.

There will always be some fanatics who try to create strife between Muslims and Christians, to push both sides closer to a civil war so that they can exploit the chaos to grab power.  It comes straight from the concept of divide and conquer. By now everyone in Egypt knows the goal of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Meanwhile, I wish everyone, including Muslims, Christians and Jews the very best for 2014.

Nigel Farage says the UK should honour its obligations under international lawThe UK should take in some refugees from Syria's civil war, UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage has said.

He told BBC News Western countries should agree to take an allocation, but he did not specify numbers.

Mr Farage, who has led opposition to allowing open immigration from Romania and Bulgaria in the new year, said refugees were "a very different thing".

The UK government has no plans to accept Syrian refugees, saying it is better to offer financial help.Mr Farage said: "I think refugees are a very different thing to economic migration and I think this country should honour the 1951 declaration on refugee status that was agreed.

There is a responsibility on all of us in the free West to try and help some of those people fleeing Syria, literally in fear of their lives”

"It was agreed with the UN and even through the European Court, which sadly has changed its role.

"But the original ideas of defining what a refugee is were good ones and I think, actually, there is a responsibility on all of us in the free West to try and help some of those people fleeing Syria, literally in fear of their lives."

'Miserably failing'

He said it was time for "a proper debate" about "the difference between a refugee - who fears for his or her life - or somebody moving simply for economic benefit".

While Mr Farage did not put a figure on the estimated nine million Syrians displaced by war who should be allowed into the UK, Labour wants to accept 400 to 500.

On Saturday, the leaders of Britain's three main political parties issued a statement backing a UN appeal to raise £4bn to help Syrian refugees.

The UN says more than half of Syrians need food, water and medical aid

David Cameron, Ed Miliband and Nick Clegg said the fate of a Syrian generation "hangs in the balance" with four million children caught up in the civil conflict.

The leaders said the UK would add to the £523m it had already committed and urged other nations to do the same.

The UK says its aid is providing support including food, medical care and relief items for people in Syria and to refugees in Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey and Iraq.

The government said while it has no plans to resettle or provide temporary protection to Syrian refugees, it was giving "as much help as possible" to people in the region and its £500m pledge was "more than the other EU member states combined".

It said more than 1,100 Syrian nationals had been granted asylum in the year up to September, and asylum claims would be considered "on their merits and in line with the immigration rules".

Health minister Dan Poulter told the BBC: "It's a very complex issue in Syria, as we know, and there are great concerns over the human rights issues there. The line the government is taking at the moment is the right one."

But former Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell told the BBC earlier this week the UK had a "responsibility" to help those affected.

"It would be entirely reasonable for the UK to take its share of responsibility for refugees and I think it's unfortunate - to put it as mildly as I possibly can - that we have closed our minds to that possibility, when other countries in Europe have taken a much more generous position," he said.

Mark Pritchard, Conservative MP, told BBC Radio 4's The World this Weekend he expected the government to change its mind - either "willingly or unwillingly".

"Clearly we can't take all the refugees but we should play our part as an open-hearted, compassionate country," he said.

"There's real suffering and we need to do our bit along with the rest of the international community."

Fellow Tory MP Andrew Brigden told the same programme he believed Mr Farage's comments were "political tokenism".

"You're talking about a few hundred [people] out of a few million," he said. "What criteria would we use to say who can come and who can't?

"What we need is a politically-negotiated solution to this problem."

In a report released earlier this month, Amnesty International accused European Union leaders of "miserably failing" to provide a safe haven to Syrians. Ten member states have offered to take in refugees and only 12,000 people, it said.

Italy - like the UK - has offered no places at all, the organisation said.

Anna Musgrave, of the charity the Refugee Council, welcomed Mr Farage's comments, saying this was something it had been calling for.

"We really hope that David Cameron listens to these people, listens to the likes of Nigel Farage, and acts on it."

More than 100,000 people are estimated to have been killed since the unrest began in Syria more than two years ago, according to the United Nations.

Defeating islamic Supremacy

How do we defeat it? With words and wisdom. And if necessary, by sword. Don't leave the fate of our  progeny in the hands of the islamists....

The spread of Islamic supremacy must be opposed if Western Civilization is to survive, for built into the cosmology of Islamic supremacy is the intolerance of all that is non-Islamic. 

The Muslims who perpetuate this striving for global dominance are a very gifted and determined people. Theirs is a toughness and masculinity not well understood in the typical Western mindset which has been emasculated by politically correct thinking.

This underlines how the Islamic supremacists are aided, purposefully or not, by the exceedingly liberal mentality of the West, which errantly believes the Islamic supremacists can somehow be appeased or made unnaturally docile as Westerners have largely been.

Therefore, the struggle against Islamic supremacy is a two front war: On the one hand exists the military struggle, and on the other exists the cultural struggle. While the West is prepared for the military struggle, it is tragically unprepared for the cultural struggle.

What has so weakened the West to the point of unnatural docility is the attitude of submissiveness propagated by a media-driven consumerist mindset in which the beholder has been programmed to think of themselves as a hapless drone of materialist masters.

This has destroyed the idealistic qualities needed to bolster the morale of a people under siege by a capable and determined opponent. The undermining of so-called tribal concerns has left Westerners in a malaise of self-worth, with no true identity or values to defend.

No doubt the leftist social engineers who engendered this state of being were driven by genuine benevolence, and their work has wrought some lasting and positive benefits. They have instilled in us the very tolerance which Islamic supremacy would destroy.

However, for the sake of cultural survival, we must now shift our emphasis to the other leg, so to speak, forwarding our newly-found identity of tolerance with an iron will against those who are intolerant of all who do not share the singular focus of their cosmology.

The very notion of tolerance which we carry forward demands that we be respectful of Islamic prophets, and of freely-chosen Islamic traditions, yet is also demands that we unconditionally oppose the encroachment of Islamic supremacy on Western soil.

In order to effectively oppose the spread of Islamic supremacy in the West, lingering historical animosities of former foes must be set aside for the sake of mutual survival. If we do not set aside the past for the sake of the present, then we will have no future.

Central to this concern is the Jewish issue. Many are those who blame the Jews for all imaginable misgivings, predominant of which is an alleged scheme of Jewish world dominance, in which all Jews are somehow secretly working together.

I ask you this: If the Jews were controlling world affairs would Europe quickly be becoming an Islamic super state? Would the President of the United States be undermining Israel with his every move? The answer to both is a resounding NO.

While there may be some Jewish influence at play among the globally powerful whose obsession with finance has blinded them to the destructive onslaught of Islamic supremacy, they are in no way representative of the concerns of the Israeli nationalists.

The Israelis who seek to forge their own national identity, free from the encroachment of Islamic supremacy, are fellow travelers in the orbit shared by Europeans, Americans, and others of the same concern, and, as such, must be treated with full camaraderie.

Likewise, whatever supporters of Israel exist within international leftist concerns, must come to realize that the survival of the West and Israel are inextricably linked, and that the utilitarian demands of this historical hour preclude the disablement of potential allies.

If all who oppose Islamic supremacy do not have the intelligence, foresight, and good will to accommodate fellow travelers, then it will be their chosen destiny to forevermore perish from the face of the earth. Islamic supremacy takes no prisoners. It is all or nothing.

There is nothing weak, or inferior, or hesitating about the Islamic supremacists. They are a robust and massive enemy. They will never settle for anything less than total dominance. Theirs is an ancient cause, and one which they believe is divinely inspired.

If we are to defeat this Foe of Foes, then all of us must be willing to set aside personal and historical animosities for the common good. Otherwise, Western Civilization will be but a tiny footnote in some distant historical journal written with an Islamic hand.

A church of hate

An open letter to the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby.

Dear Archbishop,

I read with interest your Christmas Day sermon, in which you said:

‘The Christian meaning of Christmas is unconditional love received, love overflowing into a frequently love-lost world.’

I wonder how you reconcile this with the fact that one of your churches, St James’s Piccadilly, chose Christmas to turn itself into a church of hate?

As I am sure you know only too well, this church spent eight months preparing its Christmas stunt, the erection of an 8 metre-tall, 30 metre-long replica of the Israeli ‘wall’ that it claims surrounds Bethlehem and imposes ‘desperate hardship’ on the town’s inhabitants.

Although the church acknowledges in passing that the original purpose of this ‘wall’ was ‘to protect Israeli citizens from terrorism’, it suggests instead that its only result has been to oppress and harass innocent Palestinians. The inevitable effect of this wholly mendacious and malevolent travesty will be to incite hatred against Israel and all who support its defence against the war of extermination being perpetrated against it.  

St James’s has put out a pious statement that it

‘… opposes all forms of racism including antisemitism and supports the right of the State of Israel to exist with secure internationally recognised borders’.

I’m afraid this really is the most nauseating cant.

If this church were really concerned to stop antisemitism and allow Israel to live in peace with its neighbours, it would have acknowledged that Palestinian children are being routinely taught to hate and murder Israelis (see this or this for example). 

If this church really supported Israel’s right to exist within secure borders, it would have acknowledged the refusal by Mahmoud Abbas (leave aside Hamas) ever to acknowledge Israel as a Jewish state; or the repeated Palestinian attempts to attack and murder Israelis, too many of which have been all too successful.

But the church made no mention of any of this. Instead, its ‘wall’ stunt is based on an eye-watering collection of the most vicious and blatant lies and distortions. Here are some truths it has omitted:

·      The ‘wall’ does not surround Bethlehem.

·      For most of its length it is not a wall at all but a simple chain link fence.

·      It has been constructed not to oppress Palestinians but solely to prevent Israelis from being murdered by Arabs.

·      This security barrier has had to be built as a wall alongside one area of Bethlehem because a fence here – cheek by jowl with Jerusalem ­– would be insufficient to prevent the very real threat of some of its inhabitants murdering large numbers of Israelis.

·      The undoubted hardships caused by this barrier are solely the result of the ever-continuing attempts by some of those living behind it to murder yet more Israelis.

·      Since this security barrier was constructed, the number of Israelis murdered in terrorist attacks has decreased by some 70 per cent – while the number of attempted attacks remains high. 

Those like St James’s Church who want the barrier to be demolished thus inescapably imply that they are indifferent to the murder of Israelis. Is this what you meant, Archbishop, by

‘unconditional love received, love overflowing into a frequently love-lost world’?

There are other glaring omissions and distortions. The church makes no mention of the fact that, asshown here, Rachel’s Tomb, one of Judaism’s holiest sites which is very near Bethlehem and where many attacks have taken place against Jewish worshippers, really has been walled off and turned into a kind of fortress – to protect Jews from further attacks by Arabs.

It unaccountably makes no mention of the fact that, while the Christians of the Middle East are – as you said in your sermon and as Michael Curtis details here – being persecuted and murdered, the onlycountry in the region where Christians are thriving and increasing, in a society that allows them total freedom of worship, is Israel.

It unaccountably makes no mention of the fate of the Christians of Bethlehem and other areas controlled by the Palestinian Authority, detailed here in The Commentator by Steve Apfel: 

‘One of the few Arab Christians who has dared to break the silence is Pastor Reverend Naim Khoury of the Bethlehem Baptist Church. At the risk of his life he notes that animosity towards the Christian minority in areas controlled by the PA has worsened and that, “people are always telling Christians, convert to Islam.” Khoury may have lived to tell the tale, but he moved Palestinian leaders to close down his Bethlehem church.'

St James’s makes no mention of any of this. Instead, from tomorrow it will host a hate-fest of anti-Israel activists and personalities, whose contribution to the store of love and truth in the world is described by Richard Millett here. 

Israel is currently the victim of a mind-bending campaign of demonisation and delegitimisation based on falsehoods, libels and gross distortions. Your church, Archbishop, has now become part of this sinister and wicked attempt to exterminate a country by reversing truth and lies in the minds of decent people.

You surely do not need me to tell you that this anti-Israel bigotry in your church – going far beyond St James’s, Piccadilly – is infused by a revival of the ancient Christian calumny that the Jews have forfeited God’s love and all the promises he made to them on account of their refusal to believe in Jesus, as a result of which they were to be considered in league with the devil.

This terrible doctrine of ‘supersessionism’, which was responsible for centuries of Christian persecution and mass murder of the Jews, has become resurgent in recent years through the influence of Palestinian Christians who have attempted to rewrite the Bible as a lexicon of hate to further the cause of Palestinianism. To that end, they have attempted to airbrush the Jews out of their own history, while seeking to appropriate the Christian story itself by depicting Palestinians as suffering the torments of Jesus. Cashing in on this trend, Mahmoud Abbas ludicrously referred in his own Christmas message to Jesus – the Jew from Judea ­– as a Palestinian.

The influence upon your Church, Archbishop, of this virulent cocktail of ancient theological bigotry and exterminatory Palestinianism cannot be exaggerated.

In a climate in which every Jewish communal or religious event, every Jewish school and institution in Britain has to be guarded against attack, and in which there is a direct correlation between the emotive lies told about Israel and attacks on Jews and Jewish institutions, for one of your churches to lend itself to such incitement is simply obscene.

The ‘wall’ is of course a stunt. But the damage it has done to the Church of England is immense. Because what it does is put the Church on the side of lies and hatred against truth and justice. It has put the Church of England on the side of evil.

The only purpose of Israel’s security barrier is to save life and prevent mass murder. The only purpose of the St James’s Church ‘Bethlehem Unwrapped’ stunt is to stir up hatred.

To stay silent is to make the rest of the Church an accessory to this obscenity. I therefore trust that you will take all necessary steps to counter the calumny promulgated by St James’s and prevent the stain upon the wider Church from now spreading.

Stop the export of Canadian sheep for cruel ritual slaughtering

In October of this year, for the first time in Singapore, Canadian lambs were killed in the annual korban ritual during Hari Raya Haji celebrations. Identifying a need for another supply chain, Singapore had explored Canada as an additional source of sacrificial animals. The Canadian Federal Government obliged and 500 lambs were shipped to their inhumane deaths. This method of ritual killing has been increasingly criticized due to animal welfare concerns. The animals slaughtered are primarily goats and sheep who are killed by having their throats cut while fully conscious. New Zealand has already banned the live export of animals for slaughter, and Australia appears to be well on its way to doing the same.

The BC SPCA’s position statement for humane killing includes “In reference to slaughter of farm animals, it is imperative for animals to be rendered unconscious and insensible to pain prior to slaughter, notwithstanding religious or ethnic custom.” They further state that scientific evidence indicates there are greater risks of suffering of animals during ritual slaughter conducted without prior stunning than for conventional slaughter; this suffering is due to increased restraint, pain experienced during throat cutting, and pain and stress experienced by the conscious animal during subsequent bleeding out. 

Even a draft document of the Canadian Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Sheep (2013) states that the acceptable methods of euthanasia for sheep are gunsh

ot, penetrating captive bolt, non-penetrating captive bolt guns, IV barbiturate overdoes, and blunt force trauma. Being slaughtered alive by using a knife to their throats is not stated as an acceptable procedure.

Sign this petition and tell the Canadian Government that Canadian sheep should not be exported for purposes of religious ritual. No religion and no balance sheet should ever justify cruelty to another living being.

I recently heard that 500 Canadian sheep were sent to Singapore to be used in the Korban ritual which involves animals killed by having their throats cut while fully conscious.

The BC SPCA’s position statement for humane killing includes “In reference to slaughter of farm animals, it is imperative for animals to be rendered unconscious and insensible to pain prior to slaughter, notwithstanding religious or ethnic custom.” Your own government is working on a document concerning sheep slaughter that does not accept throat cutting while animals are conscious as a method of euthanizing prior to slaughter.

I ask that you put the welfare of Canada’s farmed animals above profit when this profit involves a ritual that is barbaric and outdated and should not be connected whatsoever to the people of Canada.

Christians in Britain feel pressure to be “silent about their faith,” a former Archbishop of Canterbury warns, as he accuses the government of failing to defend the Church.

Lord Carey, who was head of the Anglican Communion until 2002, says he is “worried about the future of faith in the West” and highlights an “increasing timidity” among churchgoers, some of whom fear to admit their faith at work.

In an impassioned defence of Christianity, he warns that the government is “full of denial” about the problems faced by the Christian community and is failing to speak up for those within it who are marginalized across the world.

Writing in The Daily Telegraph, Lord Carey says David Cameron’s administration is “washing its hands” of persecuted Christians. Its failure to confront the targeting of members of the faith is “strange and inexplicable,” he says.

There has been a series of cases in which Christians in Britain have complained of legal or workplace persecution over issues ranging from abortion and gay marriage to religious jewellery.

Lord Carey’s defence of Christianity follows comments from Prince Charles, who warned last week that the religion was beginning to “disappear” in the face of “organized persecution.” Speaking at a Clarence House reception, the Prince told assembled guests the world was in danger of losing something “irreplaceably precious” with 2,000-year-old communities in the Middle East under threat from Islamist militants.

Lord Carey, who was Archbishop for 11-and-a-half years, welcomes the Prince’s “powerful intervention.”

He says: “This is something that western governments have been strangely and inexplicably reluctant to confront.

“In a recent House of Commons debate on the issue, the government response was full of denial that this problem was uniquely affecting Christian communities. But, then, successive governments have done little to speak up for Christians facing human rights abuses in Africa and the Middle East.

“In fact this government … is doing just as much to wash its hands of persecuted Christian communities as any of its predecessors.”

On the problems faced by Christians in Britain, Lord Carey adds: “Closer to home, I admit I am worried about the future of faith in the West. Many Christians I meet say there is pressure on them to be silent about their faith.

“Though there can be no question of a comparison with the powerlessness and weakness of the Church in the Middle East, there is an increasing timidity on the part of churchgoers in the West — about even admitting that they have faith in the workplace.”

Last year, a report by Civitas, a think tank, claimed that Christians were persecuted “more than any other body of believers” globally, citing a study estimating 200-million, or 10 per cent of Christians worldwide, are “socially disadvantaged, harassed or actively oppressed for their beliefs.”

Open Doors, a charity, lists 23 countries where Christians suffer “absolute, extreme or severe” persecution, headed by North Korea, where possession of a Bible is punishable by death, and followed by Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Somalia.

Lord Carey calls on politicians to understand that the religion is “despised” in many parts of the world.

In a direct message to Christians, he says the name of Jesus can allow churches “in all their weakness” to “become strong once more.” His words follow interventions from politicians and religious leaders alike. In October, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, the Roman Catholic former Archbishop of Westminster, argued “not enough is done in the West” to speak out about Christians facing violence, saying they were persecuted “to a greater or lesser extent” in 139 countries.

This weekend, Douglas Alexander, the shadow foreign secretary, told The Sunday Telegraph that public figures should support those who risk their lives to attend churches across the world.

Attacking a “misplaced sense of political correctness” and “embarrassment at ‘doing God,’” Mr. Alexander argued that the Government must do more. Gary Streeter, a Tory MP and chairman of the cross-party group Christians in Parliament, last night welcomed leading figures speaking out about the persecution of Christians. He said the issue was already “moving up the political agenda.”

“I do think our government and future governments should be more robust in requiring the governments of the countries in question, particularly those that we pour international development aid into, to focus on protecting minorities.”

British Christians’ complaints have included the case of Margaret Forrester, a Roman Catholic nurse sacked after raising concerns that distressed pregnant women were not being given a range of options other than abortion. She settled her legal action against the NHS in 2012. In 2011, two Christian B&B owners were ordered to pay a gay couple £3,600 damages for refusing to let them share a bedroom and in January, a Christian airline check-in clerk won the right to wear a cross necklace to work, even as the European Court of Human Rights ruled that a hospital could bar such jewellery on health and safety grounds.

Last night a Foreign Office spokesman said that the Government had made religious freedom a key priority in its human rights brief.

The spokesman said that Baroness Warsi, the first minister for faith, had made the issue a personal priority and that all Foreign Office ministers raised the issues “robustly and frankly at the highest levels in relevant countries.”
